Or Mea Isagani, if using my pen name. I’m a Canada-based guy with interests and hobbies as mixed as my journey, but above all, I love to learn and create.

My creative journey officially began in 2010 when I wrote a short book at the age of 12. Although it and its sequel were later scrapped, I joined YouTube two years later with a new story in the form of a stop motion animation series, where I was introduced to voice acting and many other essential aspects of filmmaking.

Over a decade and hundreds of videos later, I’ve strived to develop continuously throughout every new project along the way, leading to the creation of Shuhari Productions.

Now, I pursue video making, writing, voice acting and various other artistic endeavors while learning other practical skills. I’m also an avid language learner, a lifelong martial artist and a home cook among other things.

Professionally, I’m working towards making a meaningful impact on natural disaster mitigation, which had led me down an odd but fulfilling path, and back again and again in school.

In the darkness of the polar night, I've begun to miss the sun, something I thought would weigh onto me more heavily, and sooner. Looking back on this year, it's only fair that after being privileged enough to see the sun in so many different locations, it would eventually come to pass. Or perhaps, I was the one who left it behind. A longer winter traded for last year's shorter winter, when I instead visited Australia at its tail end. The short while I was there gave me just enough of a glimpse of its beauty and atmosphere, something I hope to see again someday. Between Melbourne, Hobart, Sydney and a few other stops leading to Brisbane, I got to see a small chunk of what the life down under had to offer, in an even mix of its bustling city life and wide open wilderness, backpack in hand. A country so similar to Canada in many ways, and yet so distinct in many others. One of my favourite trips, by far.

After 20 years of wearing a heavyweight gi, I got a lightweight fit... for travel reasons. For something weighing roughly a third of my usual gi, it surprisingly doesn't feel all too cheap. It's well-designed, breathable, tough enough, and packs down to the size of a regular t-shirt and pants. I'd be wary of doing any heavy grabs and throws in this, but for standard on-the-go karate practice, it works. The cut is just right. It's not loose but flows around as it should. It doesn't feel like I'm fighting to move in this, and it shouldn't either. Now both my father and I have lost any excuse not to bring a gi anywhere we go, be it on a weekend out or on a trip abroad. My preference will always remain a heavyweight as the snap on one just can't compare, but this one doesn't feel awkward at all when doing kata so I'll happily vouch for it. The green is odd, but that's the only pair that remained at the warehouse, so I can't complain. Lightweight first, heavyweight second as shown.
It'll have soon been half a year since I left the city to return to the coasts I grew up around. Time's flown really quickly in the 7 years I was gone, and there's so much I was able to do in that time, but these shores did not wait for my return. O

Time's flown really quickly in the 7 years I was gone, and there's so much I was able to do in that time, but these shores did not wait for my return. Over the course of that time, and in the years prior, some of the most critical points along the coast have lost upwards of 1 metre per year against the forces of nature. Harsh winds and waves, storms, changing tides, freeze-thaw cycles and breaking ice sheets have all contributed to this pressing erosion problem. As beautiful as these areas can be, the destruction is equally visible. Trees, rocks and even concrete wall formations weren't spared, leading to an increase in debris and growing concerns in homeowners seeing parts of their lots vanish year over year. A few roundabouts and detours later, it seems like I might have found some use for my engineering studies after all. I'm excited to get to know these coasts again and have a hand in protecting these and other habitats from our changing climates. I'll see where things lead me from there.

My last post was nearly 2 years ago. I don't post a lot, and each time I am about to, I decide against it. Today is different, and marks a significant milestone in my life. For exactly a decade now I've been online, continuously sharing projects and creations. It has been an incredible journey for which I cannot thank everyone who has supported me throughout the years enough, and it is a journey that is yet to end. Three full animations series, two video games in progress, books and far too many other smaller projects to count later, I am still just as passionate to keep going. I've tried a lot of different things and I've moved away from a lot of other things, but the process of failing over and over again as I kept improving only helped me find the right stories I wanted to tell. I've always had an issue with marketing myself and being in the spotlight for what I do, so while I'm uncertain exactly how my branding may change over time, the types of projects I do now and this incredible milestone are clear indications that I need to step it up, for everyone that is involved, and for myself. Step by step, and healthily. I don't exactly know what this Instagram page's role will be in all of it, but I'll figure something out. For now, thank you for everything. Don't do drugs, do green tea.

8 years ago, I uploaded my first piece of content to the internet. It was also when I first got into voice acting, although more as a need than any hobby at the time. A Nintendo 3DS camera and an internal microphone from a cheap laptop I didn’
8 years ago, I uploaded my first piece of content to the internet. It was also when I first got into voice acting, although more as a need than any hobby at the time. A Nintendo 3DS camera and an internal microphone from a cheap laptop I didn’t own somehow were enough to motivate me to get creative, and I haven’t stopped since. I recently made the switch to XLR after upgrading from the Blue Yeti, so I’m excited to see where this new partner leads me. It’s a good one, and it’s a friendship for life. It’s already taking good care of my voice so now it’s my turn to take good care of it. For anyone who’s supported me for any length of time, I sincerely thank you. It feels weird to be thinking of transitioning away from projects I started nearly a decade ago, but I’m still driven to push through with new ideas. It’s been and will continue to be a fun adventure. Don’t do drugs, do green tea. As I conclude my series of posts on the #kakehashiproject , there is little for me to add to my previous words and thoughts on the journey. Of course, there is much more to share, but I’m always open to answering questions and discussing my previous experiences. I want to thank JICE and the Embassy of Japan in Canada for continuously helping with the coordination of new ways to bridge the two countries, and I want to thank everyone that was a part of the trip. Also, thanks to @fixedbedreactor for capturing me in a game show-like pose during our final presentation to the project officials during the last days in Japan. It’s definitely one of my favourite pictures! 10/10 would visit thrice. Pretty cool country. And that brings an end to this segment. Perhaps now I can focus on subtitling the homestay interview I conducted. The big finale, I guess. For the final leg of the journey, the #kakehashi2019 group made their way back to Tokyo, as we all shared many great stories from each of our unique homestay experiences. Among some of the places that were toured as we wrapped up the trip were the Embassy of Canada (which looked significantly more impressive than most of our own government buildings), the Asakusa Imperial Palace and the Hamarikyu Gardens, where we had the chance to go for a late morning walk and take stunning pictures of anything but the dreaded Canadian snow. Although not from a visited location, the tower in the second picture stood proudly among other buildings near the new Toyosu Fish Market. I had the pleasure of getting lost on my way back from Diver City (where a giant statue of a Mobile Suit Gundam illuminated the shopping district), but this landmark tower was fortunately spotted from a distance and saved me from a taxi fare. Meiji Jingu, a temple in Tokyo, was also visited along the Olympic Museum. Having been there once before, it was great to reconnect with the place, and see that after two years, things hadn’t changed a bit. I hope everyone is staying inside and faring well. I thought it’d be a good time to reflect on the following, and most important, part of my trip to Japan for the #kakehashiproject . From Sendai, the group travelled to the smaller city of Tome, where we joined with our host families for 3 days. The heartfelt hospitality and generosity, although only for a few days, left us to understand to an extent the daily lives of the more rural Japanese citizens. Tome city, home of many rice fields, still had part of its energy generated through solar panels, intertwining its roots with the surrounding environment. In our case, we had the fortune of staying with the Iwabuchi family in a more-than-300 year-old Edo period home, with a kind elderly couple and their granddaughter. They brought us to the onsen and drove us around the area, where we had the pleasure of trying more local foods. Despite considering themselves poor financially, they led very rich lives, connected to each other and nature. My Japanese was put to the test, completely immersing myself for a few days, with no wifi. A much needed break from my standard daily life. We thus regrouped with our fellow #kakehashi2019 participants, onwards to the final days of the journey, with many stories to share from a dozen different homestay experiences. #japan #japanese #tome #japantravel #japantrip #homestay #japanesefood

Settling in the wonderful city of Sendai, the #kakehashi2019 group travelled to the nearby Tōhoku University, where we received a warm welcome from some of their Japanese students. *Tōhoku University currently ranks as the 3rd best University in Japan, with thousands of international students coming from abroad to study. It offers over 100 different programs over a large campus, while not feeling too urban at the same time. Following the prepared schedule for the student exchange, we quickly toured the closest campus before listening to a few presentations prepared by the students. Among those, I had the pleasure of learning more about Japanese castle infrastructure and samurai (by a fellow civil engineering student), flower arrangement (kadō, also sharing similar customs as martial arts), celebratory Japanese foods and the meanings behind them, dialects of the region and finally origami (please rate my crane on a scale from horrible to pretty poor). At the very end, the #kakehashi participants all came together for a group picture. I’m holding the Japanese flag, so go spot me :P C.Mea is written on my jacket because of course it would be. And we had more food, again! Lots of fun and many friendships, among ourselves and across the globe now. #japan #japanesefood #japanese #travel #canada #japon

Having adjusted to the jet lag, I thought it would be a good idea to go back to the start of the #kakehashi2019 program, starting in Tokyo! After being briefed and well fed, the #kakehashi team brought us to the Imperial Palace Plaza, conveniently a week before the new Emperor’s birthday. The fusion of the different sceneries really was something special. Tokyo really builds around its natural elements, instead of leaving them as an afterthought, which is something I got the pleasure of witnessing once again. Taking the bullet train, we were then on course for Sendai, where we saw the famous status of Date Masamune, the One-Eyed Dragon, a samurai and ruler during the beginning of the Edo period. We also enjoyed some great regional food while getting to know eachother. We were finally set to truly begin with this program, all looking forward to the Tohoku University visit the following day.

The #kakehashi project aims to bridge cultures together through a 1-week stay in various major and local cities of Japan, where history lectures and cultural experiences are given. In addition, to make the journey more authentic, a one-day student exchange and three-day homestay are part of the program. It is a worldwide project under a few name variants, organized under the Japanese government’s global affairs and tourism branch, as well as your local University, quite possibly. Students in their final year may be elligible to take part in this experience, so please look up the Kakehashi Project (or Jenesys, Juntos, Mirai, depending on the continent) as there might be an application form waiting for you! More details and pictures to come, but for now, I’m in Japan, the land of green tea! I’ve reached 400. My last post was just under a year ago, and I was at “360”. A lie, perhaps, to the new standards at least. I’m not feeling great about the lack of progress. When I was able to read/write 360, that included compound words. Which is a horrible way to count. This past year, along with relearning Spanish, was somewhat slowly spent on covering that lie. This 400 means so much more now. Including the N5/N4/year 1-2~~3 kanji and the ones poorly taught through the Japanese For Busy People series, I can now finally say that I can fluently write/read 400 distinct characters, or 500 including the kana. I’ve been slacking though. Far from ready for the N3 test. Just gotta keep pushing and hope I can learn the next 200 ish characters before December. I have more time, it’s just a matter of polishing. A near infinite journey, but I’m ~20% done with being somewhat fluent in writing kanji. A big block of text. Mainly for myself. That post a year ago was odd and I’m glad there’s finally weight to me saying I can somewhat write now. The paper shown is only the more recent 50-60 written over and over again. At least I’m progressing. Don’t do drugs, do green tea :)

The journey is finally coming to a conclusion. Masakage knives are 15% off @knifewear for the month of February, so the timing was impeccable. Welcoming this beautiful Masakage Shimo Gyuuto by Kurosaki Yu are whetstones, a new cutting station in the kitchen and a great knife block. I’ve probably been yearning for this knife for around a year, and the balance and pattern just elevate the experience to a new level. I feel like a knife snob, but there’s no excuse as to why someone wouldn’t want such a masterpiece.
